OIL PAINTINGS

Each of my paintings is hand-crafted. The process I use is intentionally slow, thoughtful and methodical—much like a meditation while painting.

My artwork often is described as serene and calming.

I apply multiple layers of oil paint with various mediums, both thick and thin, to achieve unique surfaces and luminosity. With this approach I’m able to capture ever-changing light, color and weather. Much of this work is in the Tonalist style, with a focus on neutral color, soft light and atmospheric effects.

These imagined landscapes reflect my experiences and memories of the open spaces and prairie settings of my Midwestern roots.

SNAPSHOT PAINTINGS

I have a life-long interest in black-and-white photography, taking my own photos and printing images in the darkroom. My influences include Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, Edward Curtis and Ansel Adams. Even further inspiration comes from the historical photographic processes of tintype and collodion printing made in the Civil War era.

With this project, I created “snapshots” using oil paints instead of photography. The paints allowed me to re-create the inherent softness and atmospheric quality of historical photographic prints.
